Online Dating Sites
Online dating sites: do they work?
Both yes and no. Like everything else, you get out
of it whatever you put into it. It's rather like asking whether
or not it works to go down the pub on a Saturday night in order
to meet new people and make dates. For some it will, for others
it won't.
For every person who's met somebody online and enjoyed
every minute of their company, there's somebody who's met a loser;
but that's life and it'll happen regardless of where you meet people.
The Internet's no different from anywhere else when it comes to
meeting people. It's just an extension of the world we live in.
Quick and
Easy
What sets online dating apart from traditional dating
is the fact that meeting people is so easy. Just point and click
from the comfort of your own home and you're away. No more getting
dressed up to the nines and spending enough to pay a small mortgage
every weekend when all you need do is buy yourself a few cans of
lager or a bottle of wine, grab a packet of crisps and settle down
in front of your computer.
It's quick, too. How many pubs or clubs do you think
you could cover during the course of a Saturday night? Compare that
with the number of online dating sites you could visit and you'll
see what I mean. And not only can you visit far more sites, each
one of them will have thousands of members waiting to meet dates.
How many potential dates does the average pub hold? You do the sums.
Then imagine you're in a pub and somebody takes your
eye. Now you've got to think about how to make that first contact.
What should you say to her? How can you let him know you'd like
him to come over and chat? And once you've made that initial contact,
you've got to make conversation in order to find out whether you
have anything in common. After all, if you're looking for somebody
who shares your love of Mozart, you're hardly likely to see him
or her sitting in the pub wearing a "Mozart Roolz" t-shirt, are
you?
When you use online dating sites, you already know
what the other person likes before you make contact. You also know
whether they're looking for fun or commitment, whether they have
children or would like them in the future and all sorts of personal
information that you'd normally only find out about after several
dates.
Chat Room
or Dating Site?
Are you starting to see how much easier online dating
is?
But just as you'd be careful choosing which pubs you'd
frequent, you have to be careful where on the net you start looking
for dates. Chat rooms, although fun, aren't the best places to start
looking. Why? In general, those who take the time to sign up for
online dating sites and go through the procedure of filling out
their profiles are generally far more serious about finding a date
than those who hang out in chat rooms.
Obviously, this isn't a hard and fast rule, but it's
certainly something worth keeping in mind.
Increasing
Your Chances
All in all, whether or not you find somebody online
or not is a matter of what you're looking for and what you're willing
to do in order to find it.
If you accept that you may be in for a few disappointments
and use your common sense, you stand a good chance of finding somebody
who's happy with whatever it is you have on your agenda.
